Tonight’s guest is Mike Dougherty, director of the Firefly/Serenity fan film Browncoats: Redemption. He gave us the inside scoop on his newest project, Z-Con. This new film is an original story about a podcast that becomes the only link to the outside world for a convention overrun by zombies. In three weeks (or so) a Kickstarter campaign will begin to fund the production. Like Browncoats:Redemption, all of the proceeds from Z-Con will go to charity, so the more funding it receives, the more  they can do to ensure large donations. This week’s guest is Zack Kruse, founder of Summit City Comic Con which takes place in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Summit City focuses mainly on artists and strongly supports the interaction of presenters in Artist’s Alley with guests. One of the ways they do this is by handing out “Con Bingo” cards. For each interaction on the card you can get a stamp at the corresponding table for completing it. Once the card shows “BINGO”, it can be turned in to be entered into a raffle for some fabulous prizes. Summit City also has some great activities specifically geared towards kids, such as a kids only costume contest and a kids’ comics workshop at the Allen County Public Library. Summit City Comic Con is May 12 at the Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

This week Dave Gordon was excited to tell us about the third annual Watch City Festival. The original steampunk city, the Watch City Festival  is a street fair that takes place all over Waltham, MA which has a rich industrial history that blends perfectly with steampunk themes. Events include a choose your own adventure pub crawl, hot air balloon rides, mime classes (for kids), and special performers all over the city. Many events are open to the public, but purchase of a pass entitles the bearer to all events as well as special discounts at many restaurants and shops. The Watch City Festival is presented by the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation  and runs May 11, 12, and 13 in Waltham MA. Passes are: Adults – $20 for the weekend or $15 per day – Children – $10 for the weekend or $7 per day.

Our guests are Pam Larson and Mary Dumas of Nauticon, a 21+ Fanvention to be held in Provincetown, Ma., May 18-20. Nauticon is billed as an event where all fans of any type of fandom can attend and feel comfortable discussing topics of a more adult nature than is normally appropriate at general conventions. Also atypically, Nauticon doesn’t feel the need to pigeonhole themselves into a set theme, rather going with “cool stuff we like”. Pam and Mary also work on humongous events like Anime Boston, and are working on a bid for WorldCon in Disney World. As a side note, while on the show, Pam and Mary announced that they would nominate SFSN for A HUGO AWARD! Thanks guys!

Mime Very Own Book

Doug Jones joins us to talk about his new book, Mime Very Own Book, a coffee table book in which he depicts famous and infamous people and events in classic Doug Jones fashion. We talked about his previous work, including the just wrapped Neighborhood Watch, which opens in July, 2012. We also discussed why At The Mountains of Madness was shelved. He shares some “secrets” of his prosthetic work in Hellboy and the choices between special effects and makeup, and gives us a little tease about Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein project.

Strange Septembers

Our guests are ‘Docufologists’ Jeff and Jess Finn. Their movie, Strange Septembers, was first shown at the 2011 Exeter UFO Conference and Festival. They spent a year researching, and interviewing over 100 relatives, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances associated with both the Hill Abduction and the Exeter Encounter. Initially setting out to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Betty and Barney Hill’s September 19, 1961 UFO experience, the Finns’ documentary grew to include the September 3, 1965 UFO experience that has become known as the Incident at Exeter. Our guest tonight was the author Resa Nelson, who we met at The Great New England Steampunk Exhibition. We talked about her new Dragonslayer series, in particular , the first book, The Dragonslayer’s Sword and book two in the series, The Iron Maiden, which is set to be released in December. We discussed the depths of her research into sword construction and becoming part of the Academy of the Sword Guild at the Higgins Armory Museum.
